Just a quick thought

Apparently Entertainment Tonight has an "exclusive" interview with Chaz Bono tomorrow night.

I was driving in the car when I heard the ad for it. Well, no, all I heard between the dramatic scary-themed music was:

"Chastity Bono"
"Sonny and Cher's daughter"
"why SHE is becoming a man!" (bum-bum-bum!!!!)
"she"
"she"
"her"
"she"
"she"

Chaz. Why the fuck did you agree to be interviewed by these assholes who don't want to do anything but sensationalize your transgenderism and make you look like a freak for their stupid ratings??

OBVIOUSLY this isn't a piece that is going to treat transgendered people with any kind of respect or shed light on what it is like to be transgendered.

It's Entertainment-Fucking-Tonight. YOU are the entertainment.

And believe me when I tell you that it's not in a "Wow, those transgender folk are just like everyone else" kinda light.

Dude. WTF were you thinking?

Yeah, I know. Apparently it already aired though.

Someone at work came up to me yesterday and said "Jess. did you see Cher's daughter on ET last night? I said "son". "Right, sorry son. Are you going to get that big and bloated? She's huge!" I said HE's big, yeah and has been big for years. Changing gender doesn't make you fat".

Thanks for having the back of Trans people by posting this. Why didn't he go public on Oprah? Ellen? At least these shows would have been respectful.

Love you.

He was also on Celebrity Fit Club a few years back so you gotta wonder if it's just a money issue for him. Way to set an example.

Yeah does us trans people a load of good. Not!

Seems for every damn step we take forward, something comes along and helps us to take 3 steps back.

It seems like a 'one step forward two step back' kind of deal.

I have to say it is a disappointment for the trans community.

But, maybe something good will come out of it?

Go Phillies.

I have to disagree, I think the more he is in the news, the more it opens peoples eyes. The more you hear something, the more accepted of the idea you get.
The He /She, i have issues with that still and will for a long time, so you can't get upset over that, at all. You are making a change and for others to adapt to your change it takes sometime.
Everything that is not a standard "straight" thing, it will have opposition and struggles. It is a long process and it acquires a lot of people to change their ways of thinking. People are wired a certain way, you can not expect them to say YEAY! I am cool and accept you! CHANGES ARE ALWAYS TOUGH, EVEN ON THE PERSONAL LEVEL.
Just my 2 cents.

I need to clear up any misunderstanding.

The part I have issue with is the way that ET did not follow the AP guidelines see this link:

http://www.glaad.org/Page.aspx?pid=380

By them not following the AP guidelines, it makes it more difficult for people not exposed to anyone who is trans to get in the habit of using proper pronouns, ie. my coworker in my comment above.

When the media is using She, Her, Daughter, etc people may think it's okay to do the same and it is absolutely not okay.

Pure accidents are acceptable but someone not even trying is not. Especially when they have the power to reach and influence millions.

I know you support me, L.E. I will accept slip ups and accidents absolutely, you've known me a long time now so that's expected. All I've ever asked of anyone is for respect and acceptance and you've given me that and more.

I still think Chaz should have chosen a better way to come out to the world publicly than Entertainment Tonight. Seriously, does he really think anyone will take him seriously now? There are so many reputable outlets to choose from who would have wanted that story. 2 steps back indeed.

I only hope that the general public realizes that ET isn't a reliable news source and takes their disrespect with a grain of salt.

@Katie: The point was that if "acceptance" and "understanding" is what Chaz is hoping for, going on Entertainment Tonight is not exactly the way to get that.

They aren't interested in opening people's eyes. They only interested in sensationalism.

I don't think anyone expects that people are going to be able to just change thought patterns and pronouns overnight, but at the very least an attempt should constantly be made until it becomes natural to do so.

It's disrespectful otherwise. Ya know?

You have to admit it is sensational the way a person can change their sex fully or just partially.

I admit Extra is not an educational show, but a LOT of people watch it, you know how i know? Work and guess what ..lol...my mother watches that show religiously. She believes that stuff to thew teeth...lol ..i know it is funny.

Jess, I have to tell you, if you would have told me to read that AP guideline i would not read it, hate that stuff..lol

I respect your opinion, but based on what i see people watching it is all WOW stuff, and if that will help turn peoples thoughts around, well I am all for it.:-) starting with mom..lol

I can see both sides, but I have to say I lean towards LE. I think it is great to have the issue "out" on the table so to speak, even though the format (ET) isn't the greatest. I mean, they give EVERY subject the 5 seconds in the spotlight, then on to the next soundbyte. (Except for Anna Nicole Smith. She got more coverage than Michael Jackson. Apparently you can't die on ET!)

ANYWAY, even though they may not be "educational", to have the idea of a "famous" transperson in the mainstream will eventually be helpful, *I* think. The more common the subject becomes, the better for all is my thought. Then it will be easier for real education to happen.

Happy Friday before Halloween!

Hey GG,

ET actually did a two part interview where the parts aired on two different nights (or so I'm told), could it be possible that he got more coverage than Anna Nicole Smith? LOL

I just don't get why he chose a show that isn't respectful of him at all, and is pretty much making him look like a freak? That's my issue, not that he's on TV! I think that part is awesome, I just hate the way they seem to have been treating him like a sideshow act in the circus. Even the pregnant man Thomas Beatie went on Oprah and got some respect!

Tabloid press can be more damaging than no press IMHO.

KT - what did your mom think of the show? Please tell her I miss her.

well here's my six and a half cents... ;) you all have valid points. and you all are fighting towards the same thing- acceptance. i dont think chaz is stupid so maybe he had a reason to do it this way. i agree
1.) its good to get the words out there...
and
b.) i bet ya chaz WILL end up on ellen or oprah or both, in the near future... and once that happens, however of a fool ET makes him out to be, will be remedied on those shows... and he will gain the respect he deserves.
i could be wrong but i hope i am not. the bottom line is this- gays are STILL fighting for equal rights and tolerance and acceptance... trans are somewhat new to the mainstream public, although they have always been around... and i think the trans may have a harder time simply due to the public being less educated on how you feel, they are just barely educated on homosexuality.. trans is a whole new world to toss in the mix. reality is, we should all be able to live openly and in peace no matter what we call ourselves and i pray one day we will all attain that place... but let's see how this plays out, ET is just a piece of shit show that speculates and dramatizes people's weaknesses or misfortunes. surely chaz knows this and will use it for his own benefit at some point.
until then, jess, do what you can in your little corner of the world... keep being who you are.. and don't let anything chaz does take away from what you have and who you are.

happy halloween you guys!

You know, I didn't get to see the interview in full, but I did see YouTube pieces and at least it seemed that Mary Hart was respectful enough. I didn't get the impression that she was making a fool out of Chaz or anything. And actually I remember an interview that Mary Hart did with Marie Osmond a few months ago about her daughter being a lesbian - I know it isn't the same thing, but it's still a stretch for the general public - and she was very respectful of Marie. All I'm saying is that just because it isn't hard core journalism doesn't mean that it can't be a positive thing. Maybe Chaz just isn't a fan of those other forums. Maybe he thought a 10 minute blurb on E was easier than an hour on Oprah... or maybe that's next. I dunno. I'm not saying E didn't sensationalize the whole thing, but I did think the actual interview was respectful enough. I actually like Mary Hart. She seems genuine and kind to me. Maybe I'm naive. Maybe Chaz and I both don't have the best judgment. But I didn't think it was so bad.

I didn't see the actual interview... but I'm going to look for it...

I am glad to hear that it was respectful though!

But the ads for it were infuriating. It was very reminiscent of the Freak Show callers at carnivals. :)

Thx for commenting everyone!

Happy Halloween! :D
